Materials and the development of Drawings.

Image
Materials -  The materials used for exterior and interior design range from: Limestone (Portland limestone), Marble (Carrara white marble, Thassos white marble, Fior di Bosca grey marble, Boticcino cream marble).     Glass (Solar control glass). Brass. Granite For the aesthetics of Luxury apartment, its entire exterior would be made out of marble. I would be purely white with no grain or veins so Thassos white marble is the ideal choice which is famous for being amongst the whitest marbles around the world.  The glass would be a hi-tech solar control glass that would be paramount in reflecting the heat off the building.  The buildings interior would be made primarily of limestone for all its columns. Its interior color pallet is white (portland limestone), grey (fior di bosca marble) and cream (boticcino marble) and follows that continuous order from the ground to 8th floor (first white, then grey then cream). The department store Would have the same white aesth...

Architects who may influence or have semblance to my work (continuation)

Image
Otto Bartning -  Otto Bartning was a prominent figure of expressionism in architecture being amongst the most important modernist architects in Germany. He was multifarious in his designs, creating airy buildings with lighting and space, with his ethos of openness and social cohesion. He saw architecture as a means for expressing modernity breaking off from the traditional with an emphasis on the use of modern construction with modern materials. Some famous buildings of his are, Gustav-Adolf-Kirche, Berlin (1934), Sternkirche, (1922) and Stahlkirche (1928).  Gustav-Adolf-Kirche, Berlin, 1934. Sternkirche, ink drawing, 1922 Wilhelm Kreis - Wilhelm Kreis was an eminent German architect and a professor during the early 20th century. He exhibited a wide range of designing and his career can be used as a bench mark for architectural practice under under ever changing national political conditions; from the Wilhelmina Era, Weimar Republic, Third Reich, and Federal Republic. He was m...

Architects who may influence of have semblance to my work.

Image
This is a collection of Architects whose works may have a semblance to my vision of design and have leanings or are fully surmounted towards the language of expressionist architecture. For this project I studied 10 architects in context to this route, namely; Henri Sauvage, Erich Mendelsohn, Dominikus Bohm, Hermann Distel, August Grubitz, Otto Bartning, Wilhelm Kreis,  Guðjón Samúelsson, Rudolf Steiner and Antoni Gaudi.  Henri Sauvage -  A French Architect and designer of the early 20th century, who studied at the  École des Beaux-Arts  from 1890 to 1895. He was a highly prominent figure in the French Art nouveau movement, Art Deco and architectural modernist beginnings. He was also a crucial figure in establishing public housing buildings in Paris such as 1 Rue Fernand Flocon, Paris (1901), 26 Rue Vavin (1912) and others. Where in some he heavily experimented in stepped terraces which got me interested in his work as I have had similar ideas in design. Some wor...

Initial Drawings.

Image
For my initial drawings of two building designs, these were created purely from imagination and playing with form. I was not entirely conscious of the mental process but I was indirectly answering the question of expressionism in Architecture and the architectural languages I chose for the project. Moving forward in my project I would later look for and study Architects who have practiced a similar approach to design to further aid my understanding of the ethos of expressionism and the effect it would have on my design mind. Another added approach would be the study of architectural languages I chose for this project, this would also aid my unconscious to create new form.   Building 1. Building 2.

Defining Expressionism with its colloquial and architectural meaning.

Image
Expressionism in its colloquial meaning to its artistic leaning: Expressionism is an art form in which the individual exudes his or her inner emotions, feelings or thoughts as part of the creative process and execution in their work. This expression can take the form of drama, music, art or architecture. Where distortion of form, silhouette, exaggeration and distinct swirling of brush strokes, are all employed to convey the individual’s feelings from their reactions to worldly stimuli. Denoted by anxiety, beauty, death, grief or joy.  Begotten from the seeds of the late 19th century, by artists such as Vincent Van Gogh, Edvard Munch and James Ensor, the art movement would last between 1905 - 1933. Expressionism would have its main influence and adherence in three key regions, namely; Germany, Austria and France. First emerging from Germany as a response to the anxiety and trepidation of world discord leading to events like world war 1; and a feeling of death of authenticity and spi...

What do I know about............

What should I be doing in my subject area? Creating and designing buildings, interior spaces and urban/public areas, and solving the problems along the way that come with designing.  What skills and knowledge do I need for my subject area? The complete study of Architecture can be broken down in six areas of information or expertise. History: The history of several Architectural languages; how they were born, their ongoing influence, and the study of architects in antiquity and closer past years and their works. Theory: Several Architectural principles and ideologies. Building construction: How a building is put together and taking into account mathematics and forces of nature like those in the laws of Physics. Software: The implementation of Computer Aided Design in the field of architecture to make the entire process of creation making more precise and accurate, also taking into account complex geometry and mathematics which may be hard to draw or illustrate on paper. Techn...
