What do I know about............

What should I be doing in my subject area?

Creating and designing buildings, interior spaces and urban/public areas, and solving the problems along the way that come with designing.

What skills and knowledge do I need for my subject area?

The complete study of Architecture can be broken down in six areas of information or expertise.

  • History: The history of several Architectural languages; how they were born, their ongoing influence, and the study of architects in antiquity and closer past years and their works.
  • Theory: Several Architectural principles and ideologies.
  • Building construction: How a building is put together and taking into account mathematics and forces of nature like those in the laws of Physics.
  • Software: The implementation of Computer Aided Design in the field of architecture to make the entire process of creation making more precise and accurate, also taking into account complex geometry and mathematics which may be hard to draw or illustrate on paper.
  • Technical drawing skills: Knowing how to draw and precisely plan out initial ideas.
  • Legal issues: knowing your legal rights as a architects and how to work in the commercial field.

What jobs can I get by studying in this subject?

  • Interior architect or interior designer
  • Landscape architect
  • Commercial architect
  • Residential architect
  • sustainable architect
  • Urban architect or urban designer
  • and many others

If I scored myself out of ten, with ten being the highest, how well do I think I know my own subject area?

Since I haven't actually started my main undergraduate course in Architecture, on the surface level of knowledge in the field - I would say 7 out of 10.
