Architects who may influence of have semblance to my work.
This is a collection of Architects whose works may have a semblance to my vision of design and have leanings or are fully surmounted towards the language of expressionist architecture. For this project I studied 10 architects in context to this route, namely; Henri Sauvage, Erich Mendelsohn, Dominikus Bohm, Hermann Distel, August Grubitz, Otto Bartning, Wilhelm Kreis, Guðjón Samúelsson, Rudolf Steiner and Antoni Gaudi.
Henri Sauvage -
A French Architect and designer of the early 20th century, who studied at the École des Beaux-Arts from 1890 to 1895. He was a highly prominent figure in the French Art nouveau movement, Art Deco and architectural modernist beginnings. He was also a crucial figure in establishing public housing buildings in Paris such as 1 Rue Fernand Flocon, Paris (1901), 26 Rue Vavin (1912) and others. Where in some he heavily experimented in stepped terraces which got me interested in his work as I have had similar ideas in design. Some works which may best portray his styles are the Villa Majorelle in Nancy showing his Art nouveau, and his Art Deco building the La Samaritaine department store in Paris.
Erich Mendelsohn -
He was a highly influential Jewish-German expressionist architect of the early 20th century. He would study architecture in Berlin at the age of 21 and would later transfer to Munich, during that time frame he would be influenced by Theodor Fischer, an architect whose style was a mix of neoclassicism and jugendstil, and would later come in contact with expressionist artists from famous expressionists groups of Der Blaue Reiter and Die Brücke.
Mendelsohn's style was a high testament to expressionism which can be described as evoking lyrical emotion in a highly rhythmic way. His mix of Art-Deco, Art Nouveau, international style and streamline moderne would illustrate unorthodox lines and curves, where he sometimes alluded rationality but did not strive for that entirely. His works would become highly influential across the globe, placing him among the elites of modernist architects.

Dominikus Bohm -
Dominikus Bohm was a German architect who was highly prominent for his church designs working principally in Cologne, the Ruhr area, Swabia, and Hesse. At his early stages of designing, his works contained references to historical styles, but would later lean more towards expressionist elements - creating one of the first portrayals and then abstract gothic, though still keeping conventional ideals. He experimented with centralized planning, with the aim of bringing the congregation closer to the alter like making use of elliptical/circular plans.
Examples of his work include, Church of St Johann, Neu-Ulm (1921-1927), Frellingsdorf Parish Church (1926-1927) and St Engelbert, Köln-Riehl (1930-1933).
Hermann Distel and august Grubitz -
I chose to talk about these two architects because of their contribution in designing the Montanhof
- Kontorhaus in Hamburg’s Kontorhausviertel. The building comprises of decorations in Art Deco
elements with brick expressionism and the idea of stepped terraces. This was an interesting piece of
work as my building design also uses the idea of stepped terraces in a unique way.
